Man City 1-1 Chelsea: Late drama as Chelsea hold Manchester City to draw in Women's Super League clash
Posted : 08 October 2023
In a dramatic Women's Super League match, defending champions Chelsea managed to secure a late draw against Manchester City, who faced two costly dismissals during the game. Chloe Kelly had opened the scoring for City, but Guro Reiten's close-range effort in the 96th minute canceled out the lead. The turning point in the match came when Alex Greenwood received her second yellow card for time-wasting in the 38th minute, followed by Lauren Hemp's second yellow card for a foul on Lauren James after 81 minutes.
Referee Emily Heaslip's decision to send off Greenwood was met with boos from the home crowd and led to three yellow cards for dissent being shown to City players Kelly, Laia Aleixandri, and Jill Roord. Despite playing with a sense of injustice, City maintained their narrow lead in the second half, with Kelly's powerful strike giving them the advantage.
However, Chelsea, with the return of striker Sam Kerr, began to test City's goalkeeper Khiara Keating more as the match progressed. Lauren James struck the crossbar before Reiten's late equalizer, and Chelsea came close to snatching victory as Kerr headed an effort off the post in the dying seconds. Despite their efforts, City held on to their impressive 20-game unbeaten run at home in the WSL, while Chelsea managed to salvage a point from a ground where they have struggled in recent seasons.
