Lamptey’s Late Equalizer Earns Brighton a Point

Posted : 31 December 2024

Brighton & Hove Albion earned a well-deserved point with a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa at Villa Park in a thrilling Premier League clash on Monday. The match saw Villa come from behind after Brighton took an early lead, with Ollie Watkins scoring a penalty and Morgan Rogers adding a goal shortly after halftime to give Villa the advantage. However, Tariq Lamptey’s late strike secured the draw for Brighton in the 81st minute.

The game began with a fine opening goal from Brighton in the 12th minute. Lewis Dunk’s forward pass found Joao Pedro, who cleverly set up Simon Adingra to curl in a beautiful effort. Villa quickly responded with two penalty appeals, both involving Morgan Rogers. The first was denied after VAR showed that Jan Paul van Hecke made a fair challenge, but the second appeal was granted, and Watkins converted the penalty to equalize.

Villa's momentum continued after the break, and they took the lead just two minutes into the second half. Watkins played a brilliant pass to Rogers, who finished confidently past Brighton’s goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. Despite Villa's dominance, Brighton continued to press, and in the 81st minute, Joao Pedro's smart flick set up Lamptey to volley in the equalizer and deny Villa the win.

With both teams having ambitions of qualifying for European competitions, the match proved entertaining, with a total of 33 goal attempts. Villa remain in ninth place with 29 points, while Brighton sits just two points behind in 10th. Both managers will feel their teams could have taken all three points, but the 2-2 draw seems a fair result in a game full of action.
