Chelsea Football Club has been in the news recently, with caretaker boss Frank Lampard's decision to not select Super Eagles-eligible midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka in the matchday squad against Brentford on Wednesday.
The decision raised many questions among fans and pundits alike, leaving them to wonder why the talented youngster was not given an opportunity to shine on the pitch.
Chelsea insider Simon Phillips has come forward to provide an explanation for Chukwuemeka's absence from the squad.
It has been noted that the 19-year-old England U20 international has not played a single game for Chelsea since Lampard's return to the club.
Prior to the visit of the Bees, Chukwuemeka was forced to sit out Premier League matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brighton, as well as the first leg of the Champions League clash against Real Madrid, due to an injury sustained during training.
Although he was deemed fit for the second-leg tie with Los Blancos at Stamford Bridge, Chukwuemeka was left rooted to the bench for the entirety of the game.
Many fans were left to wonder why such a promising talent was not given a chance to showcase his skills on such a big stage.
Phillips confirmed that Chukwuemeka was out in the cold against Brentford due to illness. "I’m told Carney Chukwuemeka had ‘flu-like symptoms’ last night so wasn’t risked, or at least that is what is coming out of Chelsea’s side – Lampard’s staff," Phillips said on his substack, via the Chelsea Chronicle.
Chukwuemeka, who was signed from Aston Villa last summer, has recorded twelve appearances in all competitions since his transfer but has only started in one of those matches.
His last Premier League appearance was against Everton on March 18, playing the last four minutes of a 2-2 draw.
