Lamine Yamal to Miss Nations League Match Against Serbia Due to Muscle Strain

Posted : 14 October 2024

Spain’s rising star Lamine Yamal will not be part of the lineup for Tuesday’s Nations League Group A4 match against Serbia after a muscle strain, the national team announced on Sunday. The decision comes following an intense 1-0 win over Denmark, during which Yamal was heavily marked and endured several tackles. He was substituted in the final minutes and later seen limping back to the team bus, raising concerns about his fitness.

An MRI conducted in Madrid on Sunday confirmed that Yamal’s injury was a muscle strain without any structural damage. However, the Spanish Football Federation prioritized his long-term health by releasing him from the squad to allow full recovery and avoid any potential for aggravation. This move is especially significant for Barcelona, as Yamal has been an influential figure in their campaign, contributing five goals and five assists across competitions.

After Spain’s victory over Denmark, coach Luis De la Fuente praised Yamal’s performance while calling attention to the need for referees to protect talented players like him. He noted that while Yamal has to adapt to the physical nature of the game, his skill on the right flank is invaluable, despite the challenges from opposing defenders. De la Fuente’s comments highlighted both Yamal’s impressive play and the rough treatment star players often face on the field.

In Yamal’s absence, Atletico Madrid’s Rodrigo Riquelme has been called up to strengthen Spain’s squad for the Serbia match in Cordoba. Currently, Spain leads the group with seven points from three games, followed by Denmark with six points and Serbia with four, while Switzerland remains without any points.
