LaLiga Title Race Heats Up as Espanyol Stun Real Madrid, Mbappé Wins Player of the Month

LaLiga saw several significant developments over the past week, ranging from surprising results to key player transfers. One of the biggest upsets came as RCD Espanyol secured a 1-0 victory over league leaders Real Madrid, with Carlos Romero’s late goal lifting them out of the relegation zone.

 

Meanwhile, Atlético de Madrid and FC Barcelona capitalized on Madrid’s slip-up, with Atleti winning 2-0 against RCD Mallorca in Diego Simeone’s 500th LaLiga game, while a Robert Lewandowski strike gave Barça a narrow 1-0 victory over Deportivo Alavés. Villarreal also produced an emphatic performance, thrashing Real Valladolid 5-1 in a match where five different players got on the scoresheet.

 

In the European qualification race, Rayo Vallecano climbed into sixth place following a hard-fought 1-0 win over CD Leganés, where goalkeeper Augusto Batalla played a crucial role by saving a retaken penalty. Off the pitch, FC Barcelona secured the long-term futures of young midfielders Pedri and Gavi, who both signed contract extensions until 2030.

 

Additionally, Arthur Melo made a return to Spanish football, joining Girona FC on loan from Juventus. The Brazilian, who previously won the league with Barça, will now aim to help Girona qualify for European competition once again.

 

January's top performers were also recognized, with Kylian Mbappé winning the Player of the Month award after scoring five goals in three league games. Getafe CF’s José Bordalás was named Best Coach, while Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham took home the Best U-23 Player award.

 

RCD Espanyol’s Javi Puado won Best Goal for his strike against Real Valladolid, and CA Osasuna’s Sergio Herrera claimed Best Save for his stop against Rayo Vallecano. As the season progresses, the race for the title and European spots remains as intense as ever.
