LaLiga takes action against racism amidst incidents involving Sevilla's Acuña, Coach Sánchez Flores

Posted : 02 April 2024

LaLiga has taken action against the racist and xenophobic behavior directed at Sevilla defender Marcos Acuña and coach Quique Sánchez Flores during Saturday's match against Getafe, filing an official complaint with the Anti-Violence Commission and the Spanish football federation (RFEF)'s Competition Committee.

The game saw a temporary halt in the 68th minute as per LaLiga's anti-racism protocol, with racist slurs prompting a warning announcement in the stadium, as noted in the referee's match report.

Sevilla manager Sánchez Flores addressed the issue during the post-match news conference, revealing that he had been subjected to derogatory remarks, including being called "gypsy" by a section of fans during the encounter.

Additionally, the match witnessed another disturbing incident when Rayo Majadahonda's goalkeeper Cheikh Sarr received a red card for confronting a fan who allegedly racially insulted him during a third division league game against Sestao River.

Majadahonda's refusal to continue the game following the red card further underscored the severity of the situation.

These distressing incidents occurred shortly after Spain's match against Brazil at the Bernabéu stadium, which aimed to raise awareness of racism in football.

Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior, who has been a target of racist abuse since arriving in Spain, expressed solidarity with those affected by racism, including Sarr, Acuña, and Sánchez Flores.

Sarr praised Vinícius for his outspoken stance against racism, emphasizing the importance of unity in the fight against discrimination, while Vinícius reiterated his commitment to combating racism in football.
