LaLiga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have requested the postponement of all soccer matches planned for Valencia this weekend, including the highly anticipated match between Real Madrid and Valencia.
This decision comes in the wake of devastating flash floods that have struck the eastern region of Spain, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 95 lives. The catastrophic weather has prompted widespread concern and the need for safety measures, leading to calls for caution across affected areas.
As the RFEF Competition Committee prepares to meet on Thursday, additional matches, including the LaLiga fixture between Villarreal and Rayo Vallecano, along with three games in the second division, are also expected to be postponed.
Earlier in the week, the RFEF had already suspended six midweek Copa del Rey matches that involved LaLiga clubs, such as Valencia, Getafe, and Real Sociedad, as authorities urged residents to avoid all non-essential travel in the region.
In a formal statement, the RFEF acknowledged the request from LaLiga and the clubs to delay matches scheduled for the 12th round of the First Division and the 13th round of the Second Division in the Valencian Community this weekend. This move reflects the seriousness of the situation and the collaborative efforts of the football community to prioritize safety and well-being during this crisis.
In response to the tragedy, LaLiga clubs, including Barcelona and Real Madrid, have extended their condolences to those affected by the floods in Valencia, Albacete, and Andalusia. Barcelona expressed its sympathy and solidarity with the impacted counties, while LaLiga announced that a minute of silence would be observed at all matches in the upcoming rounds.
Additionally, Valencia FC has partnered with the Valencia Food Bank to provide their stadium as a collection point for essential donations, highlighting the unity and support within the sports community during these challenging times.
