The football teams of Lagos and Ondo States qualified on Thursday in Ibadan for the forthcoming 2024 National Sports Festival (NSF), scheduled to take place in Ogun in May.
They secured their qualification tickets at the South-West Zonal Elimination Competition for the NSF, held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium.
Teams from four states—Lagos, Oyo, Ondo, and Ekiti—competed in the male football event.
Teams from Oyo, Lagos, and Osun were the only ones registered for the female category.
In the male category, Lagos topped the group with five points from three matches, followed by Ondo State, which secured the second available ticket with four points from three matches. Oyo and Ekiti finished behind them.
In the female category, Osun and Lagos States qualified to represent the zone after securing four and three points, respectively.
Speaking about the competition, the Ondo State male football coach, Akintomide Akinwande, commended the competition organizers and officiating personnel for ensuring a level playing field for all participants.
“They made it possible for the teams from various states to showcase their skills,” he said.
However, he urged the National Sports Commission (NSC) to ensure that all necessary facilities for the Festival in May are ready to guarantee a smooth event.
Teams from five of the six states in the South-West geo-political zone—Ekiti, Osun, Lagos, Ondo, and Oyo—participated in the zonal qualifying competitions, which began on Monday.
The zone’s other state, Ogun, has already qualified for all events by virtue of being the host.
