Prominent French footballer Kylian Mbappe and other national team players have voiced their outrage following the death of a 17-year-old delivery driver who was shot and killed during a police check in a Paris suburb.
The incident has sparked nationwide concern and condolences, with French president Emmanuel Macron condemning the young man's death as "inexplicable and inexcusable." Unrest broke out in several towns near Paris, resulting in arrests, injuries to police officers, and car burnings.
Mbappe, who grew up in a Paris suburb, expressed his sorrow on Twitter, stating, "I hurt for my France," along with broken heart emoticons. He called the situation unacceptable and extended his thoughts to the family and loved ones of the victim, Naël.
The tensions centered around the Nanterre neighborhood, where Naël lived and where he was killed during a traffic check. The police officer involved has been detained and may face manslaughter charges. The aftermath of the incident saw burned car wreckage, overturned garbage bins, and a sense of unease in the area. Naël's mother called for a silent march to honor her son near the location of his death.
French international player Mike Maignan expressed his sense of injustice, highlighting the consequences faced by certain individuals, while teammate Jules Kounde criticized the media coverage surrounding the incident. The situation has raised broader questions about police accountability and protests against racial profiling in France.
The French government plans to hold a security meeting to address the next steps following the incident. The victim suffered a fatal gunshot wound at the scene, and a passenger in the car was briefly detained. The police are currently searching for another passenger who fled.
Lawyers for Naël's family have requested that the police officer be charged with murder and that the investigation be conducted in a different region for impartiality.
