Kylian Mbappé confirmed on Sunday that he won't participate in France's Olympic team at the Paris Games due to opposition from his new club, Real Madrid. Despite expressing his interest in playing at his home Games, the 25-year-old acknowledged that clubs are not obligated to release players for the Olympic football tournament, which isn't on FIFA's calendar.
Mbappé's exclusion from the 25-man preliminary squad earlier this month hinted at his absence from the Olympics, with head coach Thierry Henry leaving the door open. However, Mbappé clarified that his club's stance was clear, leading him to realize he wouldn't be part of the Games, understanding the situation as he prepares to join Real Madrid in September.
Expressing his support for the French team, Mbappé stated, "I'm going to wish this French team all the best. I'm going to watch every game. I hope they'll win the gold medal." The men's Olympic football competition starts on July 24, just 10 days after the Euro 2024 final, and concludes on August 9, posing a scheduling challenge for players and clubs alike.
