Kye Rowles Aims to Change Australia’s Fortune Against Japan in World Cup Qualifying

Posted : 14 October 2024

Defender Kye Rowles expressed determination on Monday to "flip the script" as Australia aims to secure its first-ever victory on Japanese soil during their World Cup qualifying clash. The Socceroos face a significant challenge, as they have never beaten Japan in Japan, with their last win over the Samurai Blue occurring back in 2009 in Melbourne. Currently, Japan stands as the top team in Asia, ranked 16th in the FIFA standings and leading Group C with a flawless record of three victories, having scored 14 goals without conceding any.

Rowles, who plays in Scotland, emphasized the importance of the upcoming match in Saitama, especially as it marks a crucial point in the qualification process. “The last few years they’ve had our number,” he noted, highlighting the need for Australia to regain momentum in their campaign. He believes that a strong performance could help the team turn their fortunes around against Japan. The Socceroos currently sit in second place in the group, closely trailing Saudi Arabia and Bahrain on goal difference, with one win, one draw, and one defeat to their name.

Australia’s recent 3-1 victory over China at home marked their first match under new coach Tony Popovic, following the resignation of Graham Arnold. With the top two teams from the three groups in the third stage of Asian qualifying earning automatic spots in the 2026 World Cup across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, every match holds significant weight. Both Australia and Japan reached the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup, with the Socceroos narrowly losing 2-1 to Argentina, the eventual champions.
