Kris Boyd blames Rangers management for Dessers' struggles
Posted : 21 October 2023
Former Middlesbrough striker Kris Boyd has attributed Cyriel Dessers' struggles in front of goal for Rangers to a lack of creativity from his teammates.
Boyd, who scored 123 goals in 228 appearances for Rangers between 2006 and 2012, believes that Dessers has not been given the service he needs to succeed.
"Cyriel Dessers has taken a lot of stick this term and a lot of it has been justified, but there has also been a real lack of creativity behind him," Boyd said.
"He's not a player who is going to create his own chances, so he needs his teammates to provide him with opportunities. If he's not getting those opportunities, then he's not going to score goals."
Boyd's comments come after Dessers scored just one goal in his first eight appearances for Rangers. The Nigerian striker was signed as a replacement for Alfredo Morelos, but he has yet to live up to the Colombian's goalscoring exploits.
However, Boyd believes that Dessers can still be a success at Rangers if he is given the right support.
"He's a good finisher and he's a good movement player," Boyd said. "If he can get the service he needs, then he can score goals."
Dessers will be hoping to get his Rangers career back on track under new manager Philippe Clement. The Belgian coach is known for his attacking style of play, and he could be the key to unlocking Dessers' potential.
