Kenneth Omeruo discloses death threats against Super Eagles player post-Iwobi

Posted : 20 February 2024

Super Eagles and Kasimpasa central defender, Kenneth Omeruo, disclosed that Nottingham Forest full-back, Ola Aina, faced death threats following Nigeria's loss in the AFCON 2023 final.

Omeruo, who has been a consistent member of the Nigerian football team since his debut in January 2013, expressed his desire to relive the winning experience of the 2013 AFCON tournament hosted by South Africa. In an interview with Arise TV, he emphasized the significant impact a victory could have on players and the country.

As the assistant captain for the tournament in Ivory Coast, Omeruo highlighted the lack of support from fans after the loss, contrasting it with the warm reception they received in 2013. He mentioned the disturbing reaction of some Nigerian fans, specifically citing an Instagram message to Ola Aina wishing harm.

Addressing the issue of cyberbullying and its consequences on footballers, Omeruo stressed the need for players to develop resilience. He revealed that some fans vent their frustration on social media, attributing their anger to lost bets or a lack of interest in the game. Omeruo expressed concern about the impact of cyberbullying on players' mental health, citing Maduka's withdrawal from the national team in 2022 due to similar incidents.

In discussing Ola Aina's case, Omeruo defended his teammate, acknowledging that despite a single off day, Aina was one of the standout players in the tournament, earning a place in the team of the tournament. He condemned the harsh treatment from fans, emphasizing the negative consequences it could have on the team if valuable players like Aina were discouraged.

Looking ahead, Omeruo is determined to contribute to the Super Eagles' journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming to overcome the disappointment of narrowly missing out on the 2022 edition in Qatar.
