Katsina United have emerged as the biggest winner of the 1st round of matches in the Northern Conference on the opening day of the Nigeria National League Super 8 play-off in Asaba.
The team tutored by Super Eagles Assistant Coach, Usman Sharif Abdullah turned back DMD FC of Maiduguri with a 2-1 victory courtesy of a brace by Victor Mbaoma.
A renowned striker in the Nigerian league, Victor Mbaoma opened scoring in the 14th minute warding off two defenders to calmly slot home the ball beneath the reach of goal keeper Ayo Ojo in goal for DMD FC.
A defensive mix-up 6 minutes later handed Mbaoma with another opportunity to score as he found himself one on one with the DMD goal keeper again and he didn't fail to accept the offer, finding the net with the outside of the foot with style and panache.
As at the end of the first 45 minutes of play, Katsina United may have thought the game was already over as they approached the 2nd half lacking in urgency and purpose in their style of play, but they were jolted back to reality when the referee awarded a penalty to DMD as a handball by a Katsina United player was spotted by the eagle eye officials in black in the 80th minute.
Saidu Salisu stepped up to convert the kick from the spot for a frenetic finish, but Katsina United stood their grounds to earn all maximum points and go top of the Northern Conference.
