Brighton’s standout winger Kaoru Mitoma has rejoined Japan's national squad as they prepare for the third round of Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. Japan, aiming for their eighth consecutive World Cup appearance, will face China at home on September 5 and then travel to Bahrain five days later. Mitoma, who has been in excellent form this season with Brighton, returns to the national team after a long absence due to injury, which had limited his participation in the Asian Cup earlier this year.
Japan's head coach, Hajime Moriyasu, emphasized the importance of starting the qualifiers strongly, acknowledging the challenging games ahead. Alongside Mitoma, the squad includes Premier League players Wataru Endo, Daichi Kamada, and Yukinari Sugawara, highlighting Japan's depth in talent. Moriyasu also brought back Reims winger Junya Ito, who had been sidelined after facing allegations of sexual assault, which were recently dropped by Japanese prosecutors.
Additionally, former captain Makoto Hasebe has been invited to join the coaching staff for the upcoming matches. Hasebe, who retired from professional football at the end of last season, is currently working as a coach with Eintracht Frankfurt's under-21 team and will lend his experience to Japan's efforts in the critical qualifiers.
