Ibrahim Mustapha Yuga scored a brace, while veteran captain Rabiu Ali got a goal and an assist as Kano Pillars ran riot in a comprehensive 5-1 trouncing of Sunshine Stars of Akure at their fortress, the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kofarmata, in one of the Match Day 21 fixtures of the 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, decided on Sunday.
It was the second time this season that Pillars, tutored by one of the most experienced tacticians in the league, Abdul Maikaba, trounced a rival team in the NPFL this season; having in the first stanza spanked Gombe United 5-0 with their youngster Abdullahi Yusuf netting all of the goals to grab the headlines.
The matchday 21, which was played at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar-Mata, Kano, was watched by a large number of spectators.
Mustapha Ibrahim scored a brace with goals in the 48th and 52nd minutes, while Rabiu Ali, Auwalu Malam, and Umar Shehu scored a goal each in the encounter.
The visitors scored a consolation goal in the 82nd through a penalty.
Speaking after the match, Chief Coach of Kano Pillars, Audu Maikaba, commended his players for what he described as an excellent performance.
“You know every match comes with its challenges, and we always take it as it comes.
“Today’s encounter is interesting and our boys played well, and thank God we won the game,” said Maikaba.
He assured that the team would perform better in its subsequent matches.
The coach explained that the team had put modalities on the ground to win its upcoming away match against Katsina United.
On his part, Assistant Coach of Sunshine Stars, Ifeanyi Nwachukwu, said his team tried their best but lost to a good side.
“It is unfortunate that we lost the match but that’s football; you win some, you lose some.
“We are going to work hard to cover up our lapses in our next encounter,” he said.
Kano Pillars now have 36 points from 21 matches, occupying the third position on the table.
Prior to kick-off of the second half of the encounter, outgoing Super Eagles captain, and Kano Pillars legend, Ahmed Musa was honored by the club, which handed him a jersey on whose back the word "Legend" rather than his name, and his favorite No.7 were engraved at the back.
While the victory, and rush of goals saw Kano Pillars leapfrog Enyimba Int'l FC of Aba to 3rd place in the table, with a superior goal difference, as both sides are tied on 36 points; Kennedy Boboye, who replaced Edith Agoye as Head Coach of the Akure Gunners, is still looking for his first win, having also drawn their last encounter 1-1 with Kwara United.
