Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli under investigation for alleged illegal betting
Posted : 11 October 2023
Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli is currently the subject of an investigation regarding his alleged involvement in illegal betting activities, according to statements made by a prosecutor on Wednesday, confirming earlier reports in the press.
La Stampa, a daily newspaper, reported that the 22-year-old is connected to a criminal inquiry that is targeting individuals who have engaged with illegal online betting platforms, alongside other unidentified suspects. Turin Chief Prosecutor Enrica Gabetta affirmed the investigation's existence without providing further details in an emailed statement.
While the specifics of Fagioli's betting activities were not disclosed in the newspaper report, it's worth noting that Italian football authorities prohibit players from betting on matches but not from participating in other forms of gambling. The prosecutor's office of the Italian football federation (FIGC) is also examining Fagioli's case, in accordance with the La Stampa report, as confirmed by a source close to the matter.
Under the FIGC's code of conduct, a player found to have bet on football matches faces the possibility of disqualification for a minimum of three years and a fine of at least €25,000 ($26,517.50).
Juventus has refrained from making any comments regarding this matter, and attempts to contact Fagioli through social media messages have not yielded an immediate response.
Fagioli has participated in six of Juventus' eight Serie A matches this season. His debut for Italy took place in November when he came on as a substitute in a 3-1 friendly victory against Albania.
