Juventus and Paul Pogba gear up to defend against failed drug test scandal

Posted : 13 September 2023
Juventus and Paul Pogba are gearing up to defend his innocence following recent revelations that the midfielder failed a drug test, potentially leading to a ban of up to four years. The test, conducted after a match against Udinese last month (during which Pogba remained on the bench and did not play), detected high levels of testosterone in his blood.

urrently, he is awaiting the results of a second sample test, which will determine his fate. If this test also returns positive, Pogba could face severe penalties.

In response to the situation, Italy's anti-doping agency had previously suspended Pogba from all activities until further clarification. Pogba's agent, Raffaele Pimenta, expressed their stance, stating, "We are awaiting the results of the second test and cannot comment until then. The only certainty is that Paul Pogba never had any intention of breaking the law – I'm confident of that."

Pogba made a return to Juventus last season after a challenging stint at Manchester United. However, his season was marred by injuries, limiting him to just six appearances for the club.

Despite regaining fitness, he saw limited playing time in the early matches of the current season, leading to reports that Juventus is considering parting ways with him.

Notably, the most recent Serie A player to fail a drug test before Pogba was Atalanta defender Jose Luis Palomino in July 2022. It took Palomino nearly four months to clear his name.

Furthermore, prior to the revelation of the failed drug test, an interview with Pogba was published in which he disclosed that he had contemplated retiring from football. This decision was prompted by an incident involving his brother Mathias, who attempted to extort €11 million from him and subsequently served a three-month jail sentence.

Pogba reflected, "Money changes people, this crisis almost made me retire, I didn't want to play anymore. Football is a cruel sport, but I decided to prove to anyone who criticizes me that I am a strong person. They will still regret what they said about me."
