The news of Just Fontaine's passing on the night of Tuesday, February 28, into the early hours of Wednesday, March 1 in Toulouse, at the age of 89, shocked the sports world and the whole world.
Fontaine, who was born in Marrakech, Morocco, on August 18, 1933, played for USM Casablanca before being signed by OGC Nice, where He quickly became known as a frequent scorer to be reckoned with.
He moved to Stade de Reims after winning the 1956 Championship with OGC Nice, where he won the Coupe de France and three French top-flight championships, and also participated in the 1959 European Cup final.
With 13 goals in 1958, Fontaine set a World Cup record for a single tournament. That same year, he also set a record for a single year with 18 goals for the French national team.
The deceased striker scored in every competition he took part in in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. In 200 competitions in the national league, he scored 164 goals, including 152 in 145 appearances for Stade de Reims.
