Jurgen Klopp Defends Move to Red Bull Amid Fan Criticism in Germany

Posted : 30 October 2024

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has addressed fan criticism over his upcoming role as Red Bull’s global head of soccer, which he will assume next year. Despite backlash from some fans in Germany, Klopp described the new position as an “outstanding” opportunity. The former Liverpool boss, who ended his nine-year tenure at Anfield last season, previously managed Mainz 05 and Borussia Dortmund, both of which have passionate fan bases expressing disappointment with his decision to join Red Bull.

Klopp’s decision has sparked reactions across German soccer fans, especially among supporters of Mainz, where Klopp spent 18 years as both a player and manager. During a recent league match in October, Mainz fans displayed banners to express their dissatisfaction with his choice. Many German fans oppose the corporate ownership model of Red Bull’s clubs, including RB Leipzig, which gained rapid promotion to the Bundesliga in 2016 due to substantial financial support from the energy drink company.

Reflecting on his decision, Klopp told former Germany and Real Madrid player Toni Kroos on his podcast that public opinion didn’t factor into his choice. Klopp, now 57, emphasized his desire to remain active in soccer but felt that a traditional sideline role wasn’t right at this stage. When Red Bull approached him with the opportunity to contribute as an advisor across their global network of teams, he saw it as an exciting challenge and the next step in his career.

Klopp’s new role will focus on advising Red Bull-owned clubs in Germany, the United States, Brazil, and Austria, rather than managing day-to-day operations. While acknowledging the mixed reactions, Klopp shared his appreciation for his former clubs, stating, “I don’t know what I could have done so that everyone is happy,” while reinforcing his respect for each of his past teams.
