Julian Nagelsmann has signed a contract extension to remain as Germany's head coach until the end of Euro 2028, the German Football Association (DFB) announced on Friday. Nagelsmann, who took over as coach in 2023, had initially agreed to a short-term deal for Euro 2024.
The 37-year-old expressed that his experience during Euro 2024, hosted by Germany, convinced him to extend his stay through to the 2026 World Cup and the Euros two years later. Nagelsmann highlighted that the team is on the right path and remains focused on continuous development and winning titles.
Nagelsmann officially signed the extension during the DFB's 125th-anniversary celebrations in Leipzig. He had previously extended his contract in April 2024, just before Euro 2024, to include the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Now, his new deal also covers the 2028 Euros, which will be hosted by Britain and Ireland.
This extension marks a significant moment for Nagelsmann, who took over a national team that had faced a series of disappointments in recent years, including early exits in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and a round of 16 loss at Euro 2020.
Nagelsmann's coaching career saw him rise through the ranks quickly, from becoming the youngest coach in Bundesliga history at 28 with Hoffenheim, to his stints at RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich, where he won the Bundesliga in 2021-22. His success at club level ended with his surprising dismissal from Bayern in March 2023.
In his time with Germany, Nagelsmann has overseen a promising revival, including leading the national team to a strong performance at Euro 2024, where they reached the quarterfinals. The team's showing in the Nations League also saw them advance to the knockout phase, where they will face Italy in March.
Nagelsmann's decision to stay on has put to rest speculation about a potential return to club football after the 2026 World Cup, and it means Jurgen Klopp will have to wait for the German national team job he's long been linked with.
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf praised Nagelsmann's commitment, calling it a "significant signal" for the future of football in Germany, as the country looks to build on the progress made under his leadership.
