Josko Gvardiol scored his first international goal in two years to secure a 1-1 draw for Croatia against Portugal in their Nations League A Group 1 match on Monday, ensuring both teams progressed to the quarterfinals. Portugal had already secured top spot in the group before the match and opted to leave Cristiano Ronaldo out of the squad. Croatia finished second with eight points from six games.
Portugal took the lead in the first half thanks to an exquisite finish from Joao Felix. He controlled a perfect pass from Vitinha before calmly striking the ball low past Croatia's goalkeeper, Dominik Livakovic. Croatia responded with a strong attack, and Gvardiol almost set up an equalizer when his header found Andrej Kramaric, whose shot rattled the post.
Croatia's equalizer came when Kristijan Jakic delivered a precise cross to the back post, where Gvardiol was on hand to slot the ball past Portugal's goalkeeper Jose Sa. It was Gvardiol's third international goal and his first since the 2022 World Cup. Livakovic then made a crucial point-blank save to deny Nuno Mendes, and at the other end, Sa made a fingertip stop to thwart Ante Budimir, who also hit the post late in the match.
