Germany's men's football coach, Julian Nagelsmann, has appointed Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich as the new captain of the national team. Nagelsmann praised Kimmich as a "role model for the whole group" and highlighted his relentless work ethic, commitment, and desire to win. Kimmich, 29, leads a leadership group that includes Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger and Arsenal striker Kai Havertz, both of whom have strong connections with the rest of the squad.
Kimmich takes over the captaincy from Ilkay Gündogan, who retired from international football after leading Germany at Euro 2024. Kimmich, who had been serving as vice-captain since September 2023 under former coach Hansi Flick, is now tasked with guiding a new generation of German players. With the recent retirements of Gündogan, Toni Kroos, Thomas Müller, and Manuel Neuer, Kimmich's experience will be crucial in leading the team forward.
Having started his career in the Stuttgart youth system, Kimmich moved to RB Leipzig in 2013 before joining Bayern Munich in 2015. Since making his debut for Germany in 2016, he has earned 91 caps and scored six goals.
Though he has often been deployed as a right-back, Kimmich has long aspired to play in midfield, a position he now occupies for both club and country. His leadership will be key as Germany prepares for their upcoming Nations League matches, starting with a fixture against Hungary in Düsseldorf and then traveling to Amsterdam to face the Netherlands.
