In his first public statement since his abrupt departure from Roma a month ago, Jose Mourinho didn't mince words, offering unreserved criticism for the decision and revealing insights into the circumstances surrounding his exit.
The Portuguese manager, who spent two and a half years at Roma, expressed his disbelief at what he deemed an "unexpected and unfair decision," citing a lack of football knowledge from those responsible for the dismissal. Mourinho disclosed that during his tenure at Roma, he rejected an offer to become the coach of the Portugal national team and received a substantial proposal from Saudi Arabia.
Undeterred by the setback, Mourinho conveyed his determination to return to coaching with heightened motivation and confidence. His remarks hinted at a strained relationship with Roma's owners, Dan and Ryan Friedkin. Mourinho's decision to part ways with the ring that Roma players had prepared for him underscored his disappointment with the separation.
While Mourinho's tenure included triumphs like the Conference League title and a Europa League final appearance, this season proved challenging for Roma, accumulating only 20 points in 20 league matches under the Portuguese manager. The team's ninth-place standing at the time of Mourinho's departure highlighted a decline in performance.
Daniele De Rossi, Mourinho's successor, led Roma to a three-game winning streak initially, which was interrupted by a 4-2 loss to Inter. In the first game of the Europa League play-off stage, Roma drew 1-1 with Feyenoord, setting the stage for a rematch of the conference final from two years ago and last season's Europa League quarter-finals.
