Jose Mourinho has initiated discussions with Fenerbahce regarding the head coach position, as announced by the Turkish Super Lig club on Saturday. This move comes after Mourinho's dismissal from AS Roma earlier this year.
The club confirmed in a statement to the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP) that "negotiations have started with Jose Mario Dos Santos Mourinho Felix for the position of coach." Mourinho, known for his extensive experience with top European clubs, is poised to lead a team that finished second in the Super Lig, just three points behind their Istanbul rivals, Galatasaray.
If appointed, Mourinho would succeed Turkish manager Ismail Kartal, whose tenure saw only one league loss but six costly draws that affected the title race. Mourinho's mission will be to guide Fenerbahce to their first league championship since the 2013-14 season.
The 61-year-old's illustrious career includes trophy wins with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Manchester United. He also led Roma to their first European trophy by winning the Europa Conference League in 2022 and reached the Europa League final the following year, though they lost to Sevilla on penalties. Despite these achievements, he was sacked in January with Roma ninth in Serie A and replaced by Daniele De Rossi, under whom Roma finished sixth to secure a Europa League spot.
