Jorge Mas: Inter Miami owner who secured Messi in US
Posted : 26 July 2023
Bringing soccer superstar Lionel Messi to Inter Miami was no easy feat, as he had to turn down a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal before joining the MLS team. The rivalry between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi league added another layer of complexity to the negotiations.
Jorge Mas, the billionaire behind Inter Miami, has a grand vision to make American soccer more profitable. Signing Messi and potentially partnering with Apple is seen as a game-changing move that could attract millions of new subscribers to Apple TV's streaming service and boost ticket sales and merchandise revenue for the entire league.
Messi's base contract with Inter Miami includes a $20 million per season salary, but with bonuses and shares in the team, it could reach up to $60 million. His unique arrangement with Apple TV is expected to bring in about two million new subscribers per month for about a year and a half.
Mas, the son of a Cuban immigrant, has a remarkable success story, and his family's fortune is estimated at $9.1 billion, partly from the fiber optic industry. He sees Messi as a game changer for Inter Miami, potentially increasing the team's value to $1.5 billion within a year.
However, the ambitious project's success is uncertain. For now, Messi's main concern is finding suitable facilities for his children in Miami, a city known for attracting wealthy individuals, making simple tasks like finding a good private school challenging.
Despite the obstacles, Messi's arrival in Miami is expected to have a significant impact on American soccer, and Mas remains optimistic about his vision for the future of Inter Miami.
