Jordi Alba has finally opened up about his departure from Barcelona amid the club's financial difficulties. After dedicating 11 years to the Camp Nou, the Spain captain made the decision to terminate his contract a year early and leave as a free agent.
Alba's departure follows other notable exits from Barcelona this summer, including Gerard Pique's retirement and Sergio Busquets's rumored move to Inter Miami to reunite with Lionel Messi.
In an insightful interview with The Guardian, Alba hinted at the factors that influenced his choice to move on. He emphasized that the economic challenges faced by the club are not solely the responsibility of one player. Alba maintained that he has always acted with integrity and has consistently supported the club while receiving their support in return.
Regarding his decreased playing time, Alba acknowledged that he has been sidelined by the manager's decisions. Nevertheless, he believes that he has performed well whenever given the opportunity. Adjusting from being a regular starter for ten years to a reduced role has not been easy, but Alba believes he has handled it gracefully.
Alba highlighted the efforts he has made for the club over the years, as well as his decision to leave voluntarily. Barcelona offered him the chance to stay for another year, and although it would have been convenient, he believed it was fair and honest to step aside. He emphasized that nobody forced him into this decision.
The player also discussed his initial announcement in October that he intended to retire at Barcelona. However, a lack of playing time played a significant role in changing his mind. After careful consideration and discussions with his family, Alba concluded that now is the right moment to leave.
Despite spending half his life at the club and achieving great success, he had to come to terms with the fact that his time at Barcelona was coming to an end. Alba reiterated that the decision was entirely his own and that the club and its president granted him the freedom to choose, a right he had earned through his commitment and dedication.
