England midfielder Jordan Henderson is on the verge of a potential move to Ajax after spending less than six months at Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq. Although preparations for his arrival in Amsterdam are underway, the deal has not been finalized yet.
Henderson, 33, left Liverpool for Al-Ettifaq in July, signing a three-year contract reportedly worth £700,000 per week. However, rumors suggest his dissatisfaction and desire to return to Europe, with limited appearances in the Saudi Pro League.
Having joined forces with former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who manages Al-Ettifaq, Henderson is now poised for a return to European football. His move to Saudi Arabia drew criticism, especially considering his advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community during his Liverpool tenure, while the country has stringent laws against same-sex sexual activity. Henderson expressed being "really hurt" by the backlash, emphasizing his commitment to supporting causes and communities.
Ajax, currently facing challenges in the Eredivisie, sits in fifth place, 23 points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven. If the deal is swiftly concluded, Henderson could make his debut for Ajax in the upcoming Eredivisie match against RKC Waalwijk on Sunday.
