Joey Veerman's Resilience Shines in Netherlands' Euro Victory Over Romania

Posted : 03 July 2024

Netherlands midfielder Joey Veerman came close to redemption during his brief appearance in the European Championship round of 16 victory over Romania in Munich on Tuesday. Despite narrowly missing a goal, his performance helped restore his reputation after a challenging week.

Veerman faced intense criticism following his substitution in the 35th minute of the Netherlands' final group game against Austria in Berlin. A series of errors led to his early removal by coach Ronald Koeman, a humiliating moment for the 25-year-old. Television cameras captured a distressed Veerman on the bench, prompting commentators to speculate that his international career might be over.

However, Veerman's fortunes changed when he came on in the match against Romania. A clever shot from a tight angle nearly extended the Netherlands' lead to 2-0. Although he didn't score, his contribution was significant as the team added two more goals to secure a 3-0 win and advance to the quarterfinals. Veerman acknowledged the tough week but emphasized his determination to move past the criticism and focus on training hard.

The Dutch supporters showed their empathy by chanting his name when he entered the game, a gesture Veerman appreciated. Reflecting on his poor performance against Austria, he chose to avoid the media and internet, focusing instead on training. His teammates and coach supported him, encouraging him to switch off and work hard. Veerman was grateful for the opportunity to play 25 minutes against Romania, aiming to achieve consistency and perform the simple tasks well.
