Joe Willock scored twice as Newcastle United came from behind to defeat Birmingham City 3-2 in the FA Cup fourth round at St Andrew's on Saturday. The match began with a shock when Birmingham, top of League One, took the lead just 40 seconds in through Ethan Laird's goal from the first corner of the game.
Newcastle, who made nine changes to the team that beat Arsenal in the League Cup midweek, quickly responded in the first half. Willock equalized in controversial fashion after his shot was parried by goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, but the assistant referee deemed the ball had crossed the line, and the goal stood despite no VAR being available for this stage of the competition.
Callum Wilson then put Newcastle ahead with a goal five minutes later, but Birmingham equalized just before halftime with a stunning long-range strike from Tomoki Iwata.
Willock's second goal in the 82nd minute secured the win for Newcastle, sending them through to the FA Cup fifth round.
