Jimenez Scores Twice from the Spot as Fulham Draw 2-2 with Ipswich Town

Posted : 05 January 2025

Raul Jimenez scored twice from the penalty spot to secure a 2-2 draw for Fulham against Ipswich Town at Craven Cottage in the Premier League on Sunday. The result extended Fulham's unbeaten run to eight league matches, but it was a frustrating outcome for Ipswich, who were hoping to escape the relegation zone.

Both teams converted penalties within two minutes, with Jimenez first equalizing in the 69th minute after Sammie Szmodics' first-half strike. Ipswich regained the lead through Liam Delap after Timothy Castagne fouled him in the box, but Jimenez stepped up again in the 90th minute to level the score.

Fulham had dominated possession in the first half but struggled to create clear-cut chances, with Ipswich taking the lead against the run of play in the 38th minute. A failed clearance by Antonee Robinson and another by Calvin Bassey allowed Szmodics to score.

Fulham's fortunes changed early in the second half when Sam Morsy fouled Harry Wilson in the box. Although the referee initially waved play on, a VAR review led to a penalty, which Jimenez calmly converted to bring Fulham level.

Ipswich had another chance to extend their lead late in the game, with Harry Clarke's shot from the edge of the box hitting the woodwork in the 89th minute. Despite creating opportunities to make it 3-1, Ipswich could not take advantage, and Jimenez's second penalty in the dying moments meant that Fulham left with a point. Jimenez, who has never missed a Premier League penalty in 10 attempts, described the result as "two lost points" after the game, feeling that Ipswich had done enough to win.

Following the draw, Fulham remained in ninth place with 30 points, while Ipswich moved to 16th, level on points with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 17th, who have a game in hand. Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna expressed pride in his team's performance, noting that despite leading twice, they were unable to secure the victory.
