The Nigeria National League (NNL) board has imposed a fine of N1 million on Jigawa Golden Stars for failing to provide adequate security during their Match Day 13 game against Sporting Supreme in Dutse.
It is worth noting that the center referee in that match, Zaharadeen Nasiru from Katsina State, and one of his assistants, Usman Auwalu from Borno State, were banned from officiating further matches in the country's domestic leagues due to their poor officiating, which brought the game of football into disrepute.
In a viral video, the center referee was seen allowing a goal scored with the hand and also awarded a questionable penalty, which led to Jigawa Golden Stars securing a 2-1 victory.
According to a statement by the League board released to the media, the decision to penalize the team was aimed at restoring order to the second-tier league. An investigation revealed that inadequate security contributed to the referees' unprofessional conduct during the game.
"The decision to impose a fine of N1 million on Jigawa Golden Stars is intended to uphold the integrity of the league and serve as a deterrent to other teams seeking to tarnish its reputation.
"We believe that with adequate security at the match venue, the referees would not have behaved in the manner they did. We will not hesitate to penalize any team that resorts to unprofessional methods to win their matches," stated the NNL.
