Jesus Ferreira once again impressed with a hat trick as the United States secured a dominant 6-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in Charlotte, North Carolina, in their final Group A match of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup. The win secured a first-place finish in the group and a spot in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Ferreira made history by becoming the first player to score hat tricks in two different Gold Cup games within the same tournament. He also became the first U.S. player to achieve back-to-back hat tricks.
The U.S. opened the scoring in the 14th minute when DeJuan Jones, a U.S. defender, ventured forward and found Cristian Roldan near the edge of the penalty area. Roldan attempted a cross that fell back to Jones, who crossed the ball to Ferreira. Ferreira took a touch and volleyed the ball past Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Marvin Phillip.
In the 38th minute, the United States doubled their lead. Djordje Mihailovic set up Alejandro Zendejas for a cross, and Ferreira's initial shot was deflected by Phillip. However, Ferreira was quick to react and shot the ball back towards the goal, with the deflection helping it find the back of the net.
Ferreira completed his hat trick just before halftime, converting a penalty to give the United States a commanding 3-0 lead.
Trinidad and Tobago came close to scoring their first goal after the hour mark when Shannon Gomez struck a powerful shot from distance, only to see it bounce off the post.
Instead, the United States extended their lead with a fourth goal. Cade Cowell intercepted a wayward pass from a Trinidad and Tobago player and found himself one-on-one with Phillip. After evading the goalkeeper with a cut back to his right foot in the box, Cowell calmly finished, securing his first-ever Gold Cup goal.
In the 79th minute, the U.S. made it 5-0. DeAndre Yedlin combined with Julian Gressel, who then passed the ball to Gianluca Busio. Busio scored his first-ever goal for the United States with a right-footed shot.
The final goal came in stoppage time, with Brandon Vazquez, who came off the bench, running onto a pass from Cowell in the box and finding the back of the net.
With this result and Jamaica's 5-0 victory over Saint Kitts and Nevis, the United States finished first in Group A and advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will face the runner-up of Group D. Trinidad and Tobago will now shift their focus to Concacaf Nations League League A play, commencing in September.
