Japan secured a spot in the 16th round of FIFA Women's World Cup by defeating Costa Rica 2-0

Posted : 26 July 2023
Japan secured a routine victory over Costa Rica in the FIFA Women's World Cup, with goals from Hikaru Naomoto and Aoba Fujino in the first half leading them to a 2-0 win.

The victory puts Japan on the verge of qualifying for the round of 16, and they will be the first team to secure their place if Spain earns at least a point against Zambia.

Since the 2011 final when they stunned the world by beating the United States, Japan's performances at the World Cup have not been as impressive.

However, under the guidance of manager Futoshi Ikeda, the team has shown attacking prowess and possession-focused football, which was evident in their comfortable win against Costa Rica.

The game was effectively settled by the 27th minute, with Naomoto finding the net with a low shot from the left of the box, followed by Fujino's goal after a strong run on the right wing. Although Japan had some opportunities to add to their lead, they couldn't find the back of the net again.

In another match, Wrexham, a newly promoted League Two side, beat a mostly youthful Manchester United team 3-1.

The victory, however, was overshadowed by a serious injury to Wrexham's talisman Paul Mullin, who suffered a punctured lung in a collision with United's goalkeeper Nathan Bishop.

Goals from Elliot Lee, Aaron Hayden, and Sam Dalby sealed the win for Wrexham, while Marc Jurado scored for Manchester United. United's Dan Gore was sent off shortly after the restart, leaving them with ten men for the remainder of the match.

The match took place in California, with Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney present. Despite the victory, Wrexham's success was bittersweet due to Mullin's injury.

Meanwhile, Manchester United's senior players were in Texas for their upcoming match against Real Madrid, and their starting lineup featured the experienced Jonny Evans.
