Japan’s Winning Streak Ends with 1-1 Draw Against Australia in World Cup Qualifiers

Japan’s head coach Hajime Moriyasu expressed his disappointment following a 1-1 draw with Australia, a result that ended his team’s flawless run in the World Cup qualifiers for the 2026 tournament. Despite the setback, Moriyasu saw the match as a crucial reminder for his players of the difficulties they may face on their path to qualification. The draw interrupted Japan’s streak of nine consecutive wins without conceding a single goal, underscoring the challenges that lie ahead.

 

The game took a twist when Shogo Taniguchi inadvertently scored an own goal at Saitama Stadium, granting Australia a surprising lead. Japan, who controlled much of the game, managed to level the score late in the match when Australia’s Cameron Burgess misdirected Keito Nakamura's low cross into his own net with just 14 minutes remaining. The equalizer allowed Japan to stay on course for their eighth successive World Cup appearance, a milestone they are determined to reach despite the unexpected hurdle.

 

Reflecting on the game, Moriyasu expressed his frustration, admitting that the team had hoped to secure all three points for their fans. Acknowledging the unusual setback of conceding an own goal, he praised his players for their composure and resilience under pressure. “Our players held on and leveled up their play,” he said, commending their ability to stay focused and maintain their drive toward equalizing despite the initial setback. Moriyasu also noted the importance of his team’s response, viewing it as a learning experience that will benefit them in future matches.

 

Currently leading Group C with 10 points after four games, Japan remains in a strong position as they prepare for their next match against Indonesia in Jakarta on November 15. With Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain all trailing with five points each, the competition for the group’s two automatic qualification spots intensifies. Moriyasu emphasized the importance of staying focused and preparing thoroughly, acknowledging that every match in the final qualification round presents its own set of challenges.
