Jamal Musiala's Hat-Trick Powers Bayern Munich to 4-0 Victory Over Mainz in German Cup

Posted : 31 October 2024

Jamal Musiala stole the spotlight with a first-half hat-trick as Bayern Munich secured a commanding 4-0 victory against Mainz, advancing to the last 16 of the German Cup. Musiala opened the scoring just two minutes into the match after Harry Kane set him up from 10 meters out, allowing the 21-year-old to strike with power.

He followed up by tapping in a rebound from a Kane header for his second goal, although replays suggested he was offside—an infraction that went unpunished as VAR is not utilized in this round of the cup.

As the first half neared its conclusion, former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane added Bayern's third goal. Just before halftime, Musiala capitalized on a loose ball in the penalty area, completing his hat-trick and solidifying Bayern's dominance in the match.

The win was significant for Bayern, who, despite being the most successful team in German Cup history with 20 titles, have faced challenges in recent years, including early exits from the competition in four of the last five seasons.

In other matches, Eintracht Frankfurt's Omar Marmoush continued his impressive form, scoring the winning goal in a 2-1 triumph over Borussia Mönchengladbach. Frankfurt started the game with a disadvantage after Arthur Theate received a red card for a handball just 15 minutes in.

Despite being down to ten men, Hugo Ekitike put Frankfurt ahead just before halftime, but Ko Itakura equalized for Gladbach early in the second half. Marmoush then struck with 20 minutes left, marking his 11th goal in 13 matches this season, and celebrated with a Halloween mask, humorously noting that he found it in the dressing room.

Elsewhere in the tournament, Freiburg overcame Hamburg with a 2-1 victory, thanks to first-half goals from Matthias Ginter and a penalty by Vincenzo Grifo. Hertha Berlin edged out Heidenheim 2-1, with goals from Derry Scherhant and Michael Cuisance, while Paderborn fell to Bremen, losing 1-0. Hoffenheim also secured a 2-1 win over Nuremberg, managed by Miroslav Klose.

On Tuesday, Borussia Dortmund suffered a 1-0 defeat in extra time against Wolfsburg, while RB Leipzig and defending champions Bayer Leverkusen both enjoyed comfortable victories.
