Jamaica secured a 1-0 victory over Guatemala in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup. Amari'i Bell's goal early in the second half proved to be the difference between the two teams in the match held at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
After falling short of the semifinals in the 2021 edition, the Jamaican national team, known as the Reggae Boyz, advanced to the semifinals for the fourth time in the last five Gold Cup tournaments. They are now set to face Mexico in the semifinals at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Wednesday.
Guatemala had an early opportunity in the 7th minute when Rubio Rubin's effort, following a turnover by Jamaica, was saved by Jamaican goalkeeper Andre Blake. However, Jamaica soon took control of the game, dictating the tempo and creating scoring chances. They came close to scoring in the 37th minute when Michail Antonio's powerful shot narrowly missed the target.
In the second half, Jamaica broke the deadlock with a well-executed team move. Demarai Gray delivered a precise pass to Amari'i Bell, who finished at the near post to give Jamaica a 1-0 lead. Guatemala attempted to mount a comeback and came close in the 57th minute, but Blake made a crucial save to deny Carlos Mejia's shot.
Guatemala continued to press for an equalizer, with Blake making another impressive save in the 79th minute, this time stopping Alejandro Galindo's header. Despite Guatemala's late efforts, Jamaica's defense held firm to secure the victory and advance to the semifinals, where they will face Mexico.
