Jack Grealish Joins England Squad for Nations League Matches Despite Injury Absence

Posted : 08 November 2024

Jack Grealish has been named by England’s interim manager Lee Carsley for the upcoming Nations League matches against Greece and Ireland, despite his recent absence from Manchester City’s lineup due to injury. The 29-year-old winger, who last played in City’s 2-1 win over Wolverhampton last month, is yet to score for his club this season but contributed with goals in England's previous games against Ireland and Finland. England will face Greece on November 14 in Athens and then host Ireland at Wembley on November 17.

Carsley has also introduced two young talents to the senior squad for the first time: Taylor Harwood-Bellis, a central defender from Southampton, and Newcastle’s left-back, Lewis Hall. Both players have seen significant playing time this season in the Premier League, which Carsley noted as a factor in his decision. "They have shown they can consistently perform at a high level," Carsley remarked, adding that he knows these players well from his experience coaching in youth systems.

The squad selection also saw Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope omitted, with Aaron Ramsdale of Southampton being brought in instead. Ramsdale’s inclusion is a chance for fresh competition within the squad, as Carsley prepares the team for his final stint as interim manager before Thomas Tuchel takes over. Despite Tuchel’s upcoming role, Carsley stated that the German coach had not influenced the squad choices, as they only exchanged congratulatory messages about the transition.

Currently, England sits second in their Nations League group with nine points, trailing Greece, who maintain a perfect record with four wins from four games. These next fixtures are crucial for England’s standing and a valuable opportunity for Carsley to wrap up his tenure with the national squad.
