Jürgen Klopp Takes on New Role as Head of Football Operations at Red Bull

Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has taken on a new role as head of football operations at Red Bull, the parent company of clubs such as Leipzig, Salzburg, and New York. This announcement was made by the company on Wednesday, marking a significant career shift for Klopp, who concluded his tenure at Liverpool at the end of last season. During his nine years with the club, he revitalized its fortunes, leading them to Premier League and Champions League titles.

 

Klopp’s decision to leave Liverpool came as a surprise to many fans, as he announced his departure in January, citing exhaustion from his role. Despite stepping away from the day-to-day demands of managing a team, his new position at Red Bull is not focused on coaching. According to the company’s statement, Klopp will assume a strategic role, avoiding involvement in the daily operations of the clubs while providing guidance at a higher level.

 

In expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Klopp emphasized that he sees himself primarily as a mentor for the coaches and management teams at the Red Bull clubs. After nearly 25 years of coaching, he is excited about the prospect of being part of such a significant project. His official start date is set for January 1, 2025, and reports from Sky Germany indicate that his contract includes an exit clause, allowing him to take over as manager of the German national team if approached.

 

Klopp continues to maintain a residence on the Spanish island of Majorca and holds a sponsorship position with the German sportswear brand Adidas. Hans-Joachim Watzke, managing director of Klopp's former club Borussia Dortmund, mentioned that he had discussed the Red Bull role with Klopp and expressed his best wishes for him in this new venture. Earlier this month, Klopp was also honored with Germany's Federal Cross of Merit, adding to his distinguished career. Red Bull is not only active in football but also serves as the main sponsor for the reigning Formula One champion team led by Max Verstappen.
