Alex Iwobi inspired Fulham to a 3-1 Premier League victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on Thursday, scoring twice in a match marked by an early mistake from Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. The drama began in the fourth minute when Verbruggen’s misplaced pass fell straight to Iwobi, who calmly slotted the ball into an open net.
Reflecting on the goal, Iwobi said, "We know that Brighton like to play out from the back, so we came up with a structure, and it obviously worked." Despite the early setback, Brighton posed a consistent threat, with Carlos Baleba leveling the game in the 56th minute after a stylish backheel assist from Joao Pedro.
Fulham regained control in the 79th minute under challenging weather conditions at Craven Cottage. Andreas Pereira's corner led to an own goal as it deflected off Brighton’s Matt O'Riley and into the net. Iwobi sealed the victory in the 87th minute, showcasing excellent skill as he received a pass from Antonee Robinson, spun past a defender, and curled a shot into the far corner.
Fulham manager Marco Silva praised his team's effort in securing the crucial three points, noting, "We started well with the early goal but Brighton made it really difficult for us. In the second half, we were much better."
Brighton, despite their spirited performance, missed key opportunities that could have altered the game’s outcome. Joao Pedro's first-half effort was saved by Bernd Leno, while Simon Adingra failed to convert from Kaoru Mitoma's accurate cross.
Watching from the stands due to a touchline ban, Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler expressed visible frustration as his team struggled to capitalize on their chances. Brighton captain Lewis Dunk also lamented the result, stating, "I don't think the scoreline reflects the game. We picked ourselves up and I thought we were the better team, but that's football."
The win propelled Fulham to sixth place in the league standings, just one point behind Brighton, who remain in fifth. While Brighton may have dominated stretches of the game, Fulham's clinical finishing and disciplined structure proved decisive.
For Iwobi, it was a standout performance, providing the spark Fulham needed to prevail on a tough night. As both teams continue their push for European football, this match highlighted the fine margins that often define Premier League success.
