Iwobi joins Bassey at Fulham chasing European football success

Posted : 19 February 2025

Alex Iwobi, the dynamic Super Eagles and Fulham midfielder, is setting his sights on European qualification alongside his teammate, Calvin Bassey. With Fulham’s steady rise in form this season, the duo is eager to help their club secure a spot in a continental competition next year.

Under Marco Silva’s guidance, Fulham has shown significant improvement compared to their 10th and 13th-place finishes in the last two seasons. This campaign, they currently sit in 8th place after 25 matches, just four points away from a UEFA Champions League spot. Their consistent performances have fueled optimism within the squad.

Following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest, Iwobi expressed confidence in Fulham’s ability to maintain their form and push for a European place. He credited head coach Marco Silva for instilling discipline and maximizing the strengths of individual players to create a cohesive team.

Iwobi highlighted Silva’s dedication, noting that the coach meticulously analyzes matches, even during moments of celebration. He praised Silva’s commitment to improvement, which has had a positive impact on the squad. The Nigerian international also emphasized the strong bond among the players, describing the team as a close-knit family, which has translated into better performances on the field.

The former Arsenal star pointed to Calvin Bassey’s resilience during the Nottingham Forest match as an example of their team spirit. After conceding a goal, Bassey responded with a crucial goal of his own, and the entire squad rallied around him in celebration. Iwobi believes this camaraderie is key to Fulham’s success and motivation as they continue their push for a European spot.

Iwobi also acknowledged Fulham’s impressive performances against top clubs, particularly their league double over Newcastle United. He stressed the importance of treating every opponent with respect, regardless of their position in the table, and maintaining focus on each game to stay in the race for European qualification.

Speaking about the competition between strikers Raul Jimenez and Rodrigo Muniz, Iwobi noted the healthy rivalry between the two. He praised their determination and support for each other, emphasizing how their competitive spirit benefits the entire squad. Fulham’s next challenge in their European pursuit comes against Crystal Palace, as they aim to continue their strong run of form.
