Ivory Coast maintains perfect world cup qualifying record with away victory over Gambia

Posted : 21 November 2023
Ivory Coast continued their winning streak in World Cup qualifying with a 2-0 victory over Gambia, securing the top spot in Group F. Christian Kouame and Seko Fofana were the goal-scorers in the match held in Dar-es-Salaam, as Gambia hosted the game due to stadium issues.

Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, and Madagascar also claimed away victories, while Mali faced a surprising home draw. Ivory Coast now shares the lead in Group F with Gabon, while Kenya secured third place with a 5-0 win over Seychelles in Abidjan.

In their victory against Liberia, Equatorial Guinea's captain, Emilio Nsue, scored the decisive goal, placing them at the top of Group H. Guinea Bissau secured their win over Djibouti with a goal from Mauro Rodrigues in Group A.

Madagascar triumphed 3-0 against Chad in Group I, with goals from Njiva Rakotoharimalala and a late one from Loic Lapoussin. In Group I, Mali took the lead against the Central African Republic with Kamory Doumbia's goal, but the match ended in a draw after Geoffrey Kondogbia equalized two minutes later.

The qualifying format requires only the group winners to advance directly to the 2026 World Cup finals, while the four best-placed runners-up will have an opportunity through two playoff tournaments. Tuesday's matches include Morocco, semi-finalists in the last World Cup, making their debut in Group E against Tanzania in Dar-es-Salaam.
