Ivan Toney's absence from the 2022 World Cup was greater than his ban

Posted : 12 June 2023
Ivan Toney has expressed that missing out on last year's World Cup was a greater penalty for him than the ban he received for breaking the Football Association's (FA) betting rules.

The Brentford striker was handed an eight-month ban in May after admitting to 232 breaches of the FA's betting regulations. Consequently, he was not included in Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup.

In an interview with the Kick Game YouTube channel, Toney shared, "Support is appreciated, but in terms of how I feel, I don't want anyone to pity me. Although missing eight months of football is significant, the biggest punishment was missing out on a World Cup, which is everyone's dream. It outweighs the absence from football for eight months."

Toney earned his first England cap as a late substitute in the 2-0 victory over Ukraine during the Euro 2024 qualifiers in March. He had received his initial call-up to Southgate's squad in September of the previous year.

Due to a diagnosed gambling addiction, the 27-year-old received a reduced ban. He will not be eligible to play until January 17, 2024. However, Toney will be able to resume training with Brentford on September 17, four months prior to the end of his suspension.

Reflecting on his situation, Toney remarked, "I accept the consequences for my actions and now I need to move forward. My focus is on returning to training and coming back as a better player. I aim to be a completely different beast when I return. It's going to be an intimidating sight."

Despite the setback, Toney had an impressive season, finishing as the third highest scorer in the Premier League with 20 goals and contributing to Brentford's ninth-place finish.
