Ivan Toney, a striker for Brentford, was disciplined by the Football Association with an eight-month suspension for betting violations.
For 232 violations of the FA's betting regulations, Toney has also been given a £50,000 fine and a warning regarding his future behaviour.
The 27-year-old may resume training with Brentford four months before his suspension, which begins now and expires on September 17, finishes.
He won't be permitted to play until January 17, 2024.
Toney wrote on his Instagram account that he was "naturally disappointed" by the decision and wouldn't speak further until the impartial Regulatory Commission released its written justifications.
"I make no further comment at this point other than to thank my family and friends, Brentford FC and our fans for their continued support, through what has been a very difficult time.
"I now focus on returning to play the game I love next season."
In a statement, the FA said: "His sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission following a personal hearing.
"The independent Regulatory Commission's written reasons for these sanctions will be published in due course, and the FA will wait to review them before commenting further."
