"It is unfair" – Ex-Super Eagles star questions Chelle's decision

Posted : 05 March 2025

Former Super Eagles defender Sam Elijah has expressed disappointment over the exclusion of striker Taiwo Awoniyi from the provisional squad for Nigeria's upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. Awoniyi, who has been a regular feature in the national team for several years, was left out of the 39-man list announced by coach Eric Chelle on Tuesday.

The squad, which includes prominent names like Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Ahmed Musa, Ademola Lookman, and Umar Sadiq, surprised many with the omission of Awoniyi. Elijah, however, believes the decision to exclude him was unjustifiable, particularly given Awoniyi's long-standing commitment to the national team and his ability to make an impact when called upon.

In an interview with *Allnigeriasoccer.com*, Elijah voiced his displeasure, stating, "It is not justified. Sincerely, to exclude Taiwo Awoniyi, who has been part of the team for a very long time, is unfair." He noted that while Awoniyi's chances have been limited due to injuries, he has always contributed positively when given the opportunity to represent his country.

Elijah pointed out that Awoniyi's continued presence in the squad, despite the challenges, makes his exclusion difficult to understand. "He didn't have the chance to express himself fully due to injuries, but when invited, he has always delivered for his country," Elijah explained.

The former defender also questioned how the national team could name 39 players for the qualifiers without including Awoniyi, someone who has consistently been part of the squad. "How can you call up thirty-nine players without Taiwo Awoniyi, who has been a part of the team for a long time? To me, it is unfair."

Despite his disagreement with Awoniyi’s omission, Elijah did praise the decision to recall veteran forward Ahmed Musa. He emphasized Musa's leadership qualities and experience, which could prove valuable for the team. "Inviting Ahmed Musa back to the national team is a good decision," Elijah remarked.

Elijah acknowledged that while Musa may no longer be playing in Europe, he continues to have a significant impact in Nigeria. "He is playing for one of the top club sides in Nigeria, Kano Pillars, where he has scored many goals and motivated the team. His experience will be crucial, and he can also inspire others in the upcoming matches," Elijah concluded.
