Ireland's Henshaw extends contract with IRFU until 2026

Ireland’s Robbie Henshaw has committed his future to both the national team and Leinster by signing a two-year contract extension, as confirmed by the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) on Monday. The announcement solidifies the 31-year-old centre's role as a key player for the reigning Six Nations champions.  


Henshaw is part of an elite group of five players, including Conor Murray, Cian Healy, Iain Henderson, and Peter O’Mahony, who have each contributed to five Six Nations title victories for Ireland. This achievement underscores his significant impact on Irish rugby over the years.  


Since his debut against the USA in 2013, Henshaw has amassed 77 caps for Ireland, during which he has scored 10 tries. His impressive career also includes starting all three Tests for the British and Irish Lions during their 2021 tour of South Africa, further highlighting his quality and versatility at the highest level.  


Reflecting on his journey, Henshaw expressed his optimism for the future. “Even though we have enjoyed some success in recent years, there is great hunger within Irish Rugby to continue driving forward," he said. "I believe that my best days are to come, and I am excited to continue my journey here in Ireland."  


David Humphreys, the IRFU’s performance director, praised Henshaw’s contributions and professionalism. “Since breaking into the senior international squad 11 years ago, Robbie has been a consistent presence in one of the most competitive areas of the Irish backline," Humphreys remarked. "He is a consummate professional and a popular figure who continues to set the bar high."  


The contract extension demonstrates the IRFU’s commitment to retaining experienced players who can guide the team through upcoming challenges. Henshaw’s influence both on and off the pitch has made him a cornerstone of Irish rugby, a status he will likely maintain through to 2026.
