Interim Coach Eileen Gleeson to lead Republic of Ireland in UEFA Women's Nations League
Posted : 06 October 2023
Eileen Gleeson will continue to lead the Republic of Ireland team throughout the remainder of the Uefa Women's Nations League campaign. Her appointment as interim boss took place in August after the Football Association of Ireland decided not to extend Vera Pauw's contract following the World Cup.
Hailing from Dublin, Gleeson has already achieved success in her role, guiding the Irish team to convincing victories of 3-0 and 4-0 in the Nations League against Northern Ireland and Hungary, respectively. The Republic is now preparing to face Albania in both home and away matches later this month.
The Nations League campaign will carry on with a crucial home game against Hungary on December 1st, followed by their concluding match against Northern Ireland away four days later. Dublin-born Gleeson, who previously served as Pauw's assistant for two years, assumed the role of head coach at Glasgow City in November 2021. However, she left that position in January to become the head of women and girls' football at the FAI.
The FAI confirmed that Gleeson would remain in her interim role while also disclosing that the recruitment process for a new head coach has advanced to a long list of candidates, with further narrowing down to a short list expected in the coming month. It was previously indicated that Gleeson was not a candidate for the permanent position as Pauw's successor.
