Inter Milan shined at the Serie A end-of-season awards on Friday, with Simone Inzaghi being named coach of the year and Lautaro Martinez earning the title of player of the year. The selection was made by a panel of directors from various sports publications, as announced by the league.
Lega Serie A CEO Luigi De Siervo praised Inzaghi, stating that Inter's success, including having the best attack and defense and an impressive 28-game unbeaten streak, made Inzaghi an obvious choice. De Siervo highlighted Inzaghi's ability to maintain both excitement and solidity in the team's gameplay.
Martinez, who became Inter's captain at the beginning of the season, finished as Serie A's top scorer with 24 goals in 33 matches. De Siervo commended Martinez for his remarkable performance and leadership throughout the season. The awards ceremony is set to take place before Inter's final match of the season against Verona.
Additionally, two more Inter players received accolades: Hakan Calhanoglu was named midfielder of the year, and Alessandro Bastoni was honored as the best defender. Other winners included Michele Di Gregorio of Monza as the best goalkeeper, Dusan Vlahovic of Juventus as the top striker, and Joshua Zirkzee of Bologna as the best player under 23.
Inter's dominance in Serie A this season is evident as they hold a 19-point lead over AC Milan heading into the final round. Since Inzaghi's arrival in 2021, he has led Inter to win three Italian Supercups, two Italian Cups, and reached the Champions League final last season.
Despite an early exit in the Champions League and Italian Cup this season, Inter secured 29 wins, six draws, and only two losses in Serie A. The club recently experienced a change in ownership, with US fund Oaktree taking over from the Chinese group Suning. This transition also came with news of an increase in season ticket prices at San Siro for the next season.
