Inter Milan Keep Pressure on Napoli with Victory; Lazio Bounce Back in Serie A

Posted : 20 January 2025

Inter Milan stayed within striking distance of Serie A leaders Napoli by securing a 3-1 win over Empoli on Sunday, keeping the gap to three points. Lautaro Martinez, Denzel Dumfries, and Marcus Thuram all found the net in the second half to give the champions a hard-earned victory at the San Siro.

The result helps Inter keep pace with Napoli, who also earned a thrilling 3-2 win over Atalanta on Saturday, though Inter still have a game in hand.

Napoli's victory over Atalanta extended their lead, but Inter face a grueling schedule with Champions League commitments. Simone Inzaghi's side has to contend with their final two group-stage fixtures in the Champions League against Sparta Prague and Monaco, as well as key Serie A matches, including a Milan derby, trips to Juventus, Napoli, and Atalanta, before mid-March. Despite this challenge, Inter are determined to maintain their title defense.

Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring for Inter in the 55th minute with a long-range effort, marking his second consecutive home goal after a long dry spell. Dumfries' header from a Kristjan Asllani corner added a second, but a strike from Empoli’s Sebastiano Esposito in the 79th minute brought some tension to the stadium. However, Thuram sealed the win for Inter with his 13th league goal of the season, ensuring they kept their momentum going.

Meanwhile, Lazio stayed in the Champions League spots with a dominant 3-0 victory over Verona. Samuel Gigot, Boulaye Dia, and Mattia Zaccagni were on target, helping Lazio bounce back from a three-match winless streak.

Verona, struggling near the relegation zone, suffered their 14th defeat in 21 league matches. With new ownership, Verona are fighting against relegation, sitting just outside the bottom three, separated by goal difference from Como, who host Udinese on Monday.
