Inter Milan clinch 20th Serie A title with derby triumph over Milan

Posted : 23 April 2024

Inter clinched their 20th Serie A championship with a resounding 2-1 victory over Milan in the derby, marking a historic triumph after 35 years of drought at their home ground, San Siro. Leading the Italian league for most of the season with an impregnable defense and an unstoppable attacking force, Inter's triumph was the culmination of a dominant campaign. The win not only secured the title but also opened a staggering 17-point gap over second-placed Milan with five rounds remaining, leaving no doubt about their supremacy.

Francesco Acerbi opened the scoring for Inter in the 18th minute, setting the tone for their victory, before Marcus Thuram doubled their lead with a precise strike in the 49th minute. Milan's Pikayo Tomori managed to pull one back in the 80th minute, but it was too late to alter the course of the game. The match witnessed heated exchanges between players, resulting in red cards for Theo Hernandez, Denzel Dumfries, and Davide Calabria in extra time, adding to the drama of the derby clash.

Despite significant departures at the start of the season, including key players like Andre Onana, Milan Skriniar, and Romelu Lukaku, Inter rebuilt their squad seamlessly under the guidance of manager Simone Inzaghi. Lautaro Martinez emerged as a standout performer, notching 23 league goals and attracting interest from top clubs, although he is expected to extend his contract with Inter. Inzaghi's leadership proved pivotal as he guided the team to their first title since 2020/21, earning recognition as the "Coach of the Year."

In Serie A's other fixture of the evening, Bologna strengthened their bid for a Champions League spot with a convincing 3-1 victory over Roma. Goals from Osama Al Azouzi, Joshua Zirkzee, and Alexis Salmakres secured the win for Bologna, placing them firmly in fourth position. Sardar Azmon Tsimak briefly reduced the deficit for Roma in the 56th minute, but Bologna's dominance prevailed, underscoring their ambitions for European qualification.
